About Sue

Hi, I’m Sue and I’m passionate when it comes to colour.
I have worked for many of the cosmetic houses, including Lancome, Clairns, Clinique and Laura Mercier to name a few.
I have been blessed to have operated a successful business
as an artist for a six year stint and am still with a publishing company in America selling prints to major stores. I have a background in design and decorating where I studied colour intensively, along with my colour mixing due to my artistry. I have extensive knowledge when it comes to mixing and combining colours. Colour is a joy, it is a powerful tool. Life would be dull without colour. My guarantee is to make colour work for you.

What you can’t do in an instant

  • You can’t change your body type

  • You can’t wind back time

  • You can’t change your natural colouring

What you can do straight away
Know what colours work for you.

Choosing your best colours is a game changer!

The push backs I hear…

I just don’t care, I wear what colours I like

My response: Do you feel great in all your clothes choices? You have no clothes with tags still attached? There are no items pushed to the back of the wardrobe? You feel like you glow every time you walk out the door? If the answer is yes I’m doing great then you will most likely shop your colours and also for your body type. If the answer is no then knowing your seasonal colours is a powerful tool to have, it’s half the battle won in an hour or so spent with me, understanding what your harmonious colours are, your body shape and what your personal style is.

It’s too hard to hunt down the perfect colours

My response: It’s easy to identify your colours if you are certain what they are. It’s then easy to avoid the racks full of unflattering colours. This saves you time in contemplating clothing items that will just look draining once in the fitting room. If your colours aren’t available then shop your wardrobe until next time you’re out shopping.

It’s hard enough getting something that fits well, finding this in your colour is near impossible

My response: Knowing your body type and what cuts are best for you helps you to quickly identify weather the clothing item is right for you. So maybe you are putting a lot of energy into finding the fit, which is exhausting, and then the colour becomes an extra chore you just don’t need to face once you have finally settled on an item. Go colour first then style.

I’m just not into fashion

My response: This isn’t about fashion, this is about you. Do you care about your hairstyle? Do you care about your lipstick choice? Your foundation choice? Wearing the wrong colours is as damning as wearing the wrong lipstick or covering your face with the wrong undertone of foundation. I have worked for many of the makeup houses including Lancome, Clairns, Clinique, Laura Mercier etc. Shopping lipsticks, blushers and foundation is a major challenge and frustration for many women, when you know your colours you then avoid the wrong tones with all make up.

FAQs

  • Why does Shades of Hue think that we need to redirect our thoughts and actions back to reality regarding stying?
I was often overhearing women around me asking retail staff questions like “does this look good on me?”, or hearing statements like “I’m so confused, why do I look unwell in this outfit?”, or, “ I can’t find anything that looks good on me”. I was hearing negative words that they were saying about themselves and it was making me sad. It was clear that these women were being driven by the trend train of inappropriate items and trending colours. If they knew their best colours and the best cuts of clothing for them then they would not have had those items that were making them feel negative hanging in the fitting room. I would often get people approaching me asking me for my advice, I realised that more than one or two sentences of my opinion was not going to be convincing. I wanted to direct them to a space where guidance would be found. I built this website and attached my Instagram page where I regularly post constructive advice for all body shapes and colour seasons.

  • What Is Your Background?
I studied with TAFE Tasmania, and am a qualified Interior Decorator/Designer. This seems unconnected to personal styling but it’s really not in my opinion. I have a great appreciation for colour and its effects when paired with others colours. I have an understanding of balance and proportion and how to align both. I am confident with creating balance and harmony, both in interiors and on the body. I have previously owned and operated a few small businesses before. I started up my first homewares business in Hobart Tasmania when I was 22. It was a successful small business, although I did also start my little family at the same time and finished up selling the business after a few years. I then concentrated on being a mum of two small children with a side hustle of painted finishes for client’s, in their homes while my children were at school. I moved to Melbourne when I was in my early thirties and have worked with various high end make up brands, Clinique, Lancôme, Laura Mercier just to name a few. I felt like I needed to start up another creative business after some time. I launched a successful children’s cooking party business which I ran for six years and after this, went back to painting. I have been blessed with having created a wonderful portfolio of work in the art industry. I still have a publisher in America who sells prints off my original works. I painted original art for over six years and was selling my work in galleries across Australia as well as on line.
